A couple of snapping turtles I caught while herping...

The Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a large freshwater turtle of the family Chelydridae. Its natural range extends from southeastern Canada south, west to the Rocky Mountains (and beyond, where introduced), throughout Mexico, and as far south as Ecuador. This species and the larger Alligator Snapping Turtle are both widely referred to as snapping turtles or snappers (though the Common Snapping Turtle, as its name implies, is much more widespread overall).

A couple of snapping turtles I caught while herping...

There is a canal in back of me and I go herping there whenever i can. The canal branches off to a salmon ladder that is usually dried up except for a pool of water at the base of the second landing. I have found most of my critters in this pool, including two snapping turtles.

The first one I caught last year and I estimated him to be about a year old based on his size:

Last month I caught another one, I think it had been born recently:

Both times I took them the short walk home to take some pictures, and then released them back to where I caught them. Both were named Snappy :)

That little guy is cute; I bet it would still hurt if he got a hold of your finger! I have seen a few snappers down at the local beach. There is an inlet where they hang out. I will try to photo them without getting bit ;)

Ohh they're adorable. I am way jealous. Snapping turtles are very illegal to keep or even pick up in MA. I understand why... stupid idiots like to keep them because they are so tiny and cute, not realizing they grow to be big enough to need an entire garged size cage! So... they let them go, and they die. I used to work in a pet store for 2 years... can't tell you how many stupid people came in asking how to take care of some wild animal they found outside and decided to keep :(

Yeah I would never keep them, I just take them home to take pictures, and then put them back where I found them. The baby ones don't seem to want to bite either, just hide in their shells.

Yeah, I don't care much for them either. I don't know why. I think its just personal preference.
